How Good is Strictly Come Dancing?

How Good is Strictly Come Dancing? By John L Orchan

Absolutely brilliant! It's just a simple dancing competition isn't it?

Ingredients...Take fourteen professional dancers, team them up with fourteen well known celebrities....compete with each other on a weekly basis. They all learn everything from the Tango to the Paso Doble. They all have to perform in front of a live studio audience every Saturday night, fighting to keep their place in the competition.

Each week someone is eliminated, until two are left standing as winners. The show starts in October and ends just before Christmas time, running for a total of three months.
Simple formula?...Yes.

However it has the ability to grip the whole nation for 12 weeks. Everyone is talking about it. I didn't have any interest in dancing 2 years ago. Fast forward...now I cannot get enough!

I know I am not alone. If you ever want a great conversation starter, a guaranteed 'chat up line', or ice-breaker, it has got to be... how good is Strictly Come Dancing?

It's so good that even the American's have their own version... Dancing With The Stars. The legend, who is Bruce Forsyth hosts the show along with the glamorous co-host Tess Daly.

The resident judges Len Goodman, Arlene Phillips, Craig Revel Horwood (probably the harshest judge), and Bruno Tonioli have to be impressed. They are great fun to watch, and they don't 'pull any punches' either.

Although their voting has an effect on the outcome..the real voting is done by us.. the public, during the show.

When the show ends on Saturday night, viewers can continue to vote for their favourite couple. The lines will then close and votes will be counted and verified. Then we are all treated to a Strictly Sunday results treat. The bottom two couples are announced. They will then face a very nerve racking dance-off.

Then it's all up to the judges to decide who will stay or go. Their decision is based solely on that single performance alone.

Rivetting stuff. Everyone can get very emotional out there...including me! The hot topic of debate in our whole family for three months is who is going to get voted off, who did well, who flunked, who did we feel sorry for, and of course...who's gonna win!

If you want the 'bug', then tune in to the dedicated Strictly blog which will be updated daily for 2008.

So next time you meet a stranger, ask them, "How good is Strictly Come Dancing?". Then be prepared for a very long conversation!
